It’s a grim time for the motor industry. But, then, it’s been a long time since auto manufacturers enjoyed the heady, glorious days of the seventies before the first major oil crisis took hold on the market’s wallet and kept them hesitant ever since.

One auto maker that has often been teetering on the brink and still hovers near the “filing for bankruptcy” headlines is Renault. This time, though, they have an ace up their sleeve: style.

It’s an obvious statement to make that trade shows demonstrate the effects of a market on any given industry. It’s telling, therefore, that the first of the big auto shows of 2009 was affected by the climate in more ways than the piles of snow that drifted against the entrances of the Detroit-held North American Motor Show.
